DISA Job Fair Targets Cybersecurity Students

For students seeking employment, the federal government seeks interns and entry-level candidates within IT and cybersecurity. Job positions including program management support, technical support engineers, policy review professionals, network security support engineers and IT specialists are open for immediate hire within the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).

DISA is hosting its first higher education career fair, in cooperation with Anne Arundel Community College, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Anne Arundel Community College at Arundel Mills, Hanover, Md. This career fair is focused on recruitment of positions in DISA's Intern, Student Temporary Employment Program and Student Career Experience Program.

This career fair is open to all two-year and four-year students, as well as entry-level professionals looking to work at Fort Meade, MD., where DISA will be relocating in 2010. There will be senior managers and hiring officers present to conduct interviews.

"We have open positions for everybody looking for a challenging career in cybersecurity," says Doug Gardner, Technical Director with DISA.

Key areas of focus in job applications include:

  1. Academic qualification -- students and fresh graduates focusing on computer science, engineering, mathematics, and information systems technology are preferred. Specific experience or coursework in information assurance, computer security and network security is a big plus.

  2. Technical background -- and understanding of current software, systems and networks is required along with a commitment to serve the country.

  3. Security clearance -- candidates must be qualified to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance

"We want new thoughts, ideas and energy in our workforce and want to hire the best and brightest of students to join us," says Myra Powell, a senior program analyst with DISA.

DISA is in the process of hiring personnel at all levels to support the expansion of the information assurance mission and to replace current employees who plan to retire or leave the agency rather than transition to Fort Meade.

The starting salaries for these positions are within the range of $21,529 to $50,408. In addition, DISA is actively looking to invest in employees by sending them for advanced certification and training requirements such as the CISSP, CISA and SANS certification.
