The Field Report with Tom Field

Let's Focus on What We Can Control: Security

Let's Focus on What We Can Control: Security

There's so much we can't control today. The global economy, the fickle stock market, rampant layoffs, decisions being made in Washington, D.C. All these elements affect us, but there's little to nothing we can do to influence them.

Helpless feeling, no?

That's why this week, in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday, we're prepared a news package focusing on some things you can control - what I'm calling The 5 Essentials of Banking Security in Tough Times.

The goal here is to look away, at least momentarily, from all the events beyond our control, and to focus on fundamental security issues that we can - and must - concentrate on to ensure safety and soundness in these trying times.

Regulatory compliance, for instance - the standards don't loosen just because the purse strings tighten. For more on how some banking institutions are coping with current regulatory mandates, please listen to my interview with fellow blogger David Schneier.

The increased insider threat is another hot topic. The rise of phishing attempts (fraudsters love to take advantage of confusion in the marketplace). Increased physical security risks, especially at the ATM. These are among the topics we tackle in this piece, with tips from experts on how you can take control of these vulnerabilities and provide greater security for your customers and staff.

I'm grateful for the insights we received from the experts, but I'd be even more thankful to hear from you: What are you doing to protect your institution from all of the threats raining down in these hard times?

Share your tips with me - tfield@bankinfosecurity.com. I'll print the best of them in this space next week.

Until then, Happy Thanksgiving, good luck with Black Friday, and make sure you help your customers stay safe on Cyber Monday!
