The AI Standoff: Attackers Versus Defenders

In the ongoing AI race between defenders and attackers, it is crucial for CISOs to understand the attacker's mindset to implement stronger defenses. Governments used to operate with a "low and slow" approach, incrementally advancing their operations over time to avoid detection, according to Lior Div, former CEO and co-founder of Cybereason. But a few years ago, the merging of crypto and hacking operations created the ransomware-as-a-business model, enabling criminals to generate revenue on a large scale, he said.

"We're now at a pivotal point where criminals, with the aid of AI, will become super criminals, using AI to be more aggressive and achieve their goals, whether it's espionage or revenue generation," Div said.

"While commercial algorithms in the U.S. are built with safety in mind, limiting their capabilities, algorithms in places like China or Russia are likely trained without such constraints, posing a significant challenge," he said.

In this video interview with the Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2024, Div also discussed:

  • How cybercriminals are using AI beyond traditional methods such as phishing and malware generation;
  • Strategies CISOs and CIOs can employ to enhance context and strengthen detection systems using AI;
  • How attackers use publicly available information for targeted attacks.

Before launching Boston-based Cybereason, Div was a member of Unit 8200, the Israeli intelligence group responsible for collecting signal intelligence and decrypting codes. He recently founded another cybersecurity firm, Stealth.
